The Keeping Room • Stories Live Here

Some stories belong on the mantel. Others are under the chair.

This is where announcements, barn lessons, rabbit personalities, family memories, and the stories I could never fit into a neat little box come to stay. Pull up the chair with the least hay on it.

Not a blog • A room that remembers

I did not want our life flattened into a list of dates.

So the stories live where they make sense. Celebrations go on the mantel. Lessons land on the table. Rabbit introductions belong in the family album. The messier moments usually turn up wherever Hurricane last sat down and announced he had a system.

The Mantel

Milestones worth setting where everybody can see them—even if the frame is slightly crooked.

The Barn Table

Useful lessons learned with our sleeves rolled up, our notes open, and usually hay in the coffee.

The Family Album

Rabbits, people, arrivals, firsts, favorites, and the personalities that turned a herd into our herd.

Hurricane’s Loose Papers

Mysteries, mishaps, announcements, and evidence that I can laugh at myself once the fan is finally assembled.

The Honest Chair

The tender, difficult, brave stories that deserve a quiet place and the truth instead of a tidy ending.

Stars, Rabbits, and the Rabbit Lady in Her Pajamas

The page became eligible for Stars, but the real celebration was the community already gathered around the rabbits.

Well, this is exciting... Nutt House Rabbitry is now eligible to receive ⭐ STARS! ⭐\n\nWhen I started this page, my goal wasn’t to become an influencer or go viral. I simply wanted to share my passion for heritage rabbits, connect with other rabbit enthusiasts, educate people about these incredible endangered breeds, and maybe convince a few more folks that rabbits are pretty amazing. 🐰💜\n\nWhat I didn’t expect was to find such a wonderful community of people who follow along, ask questions, cheer us on at shows, celebrate new litters, and support breed conservation.\n\nSo, thank you.\n\nThank you for every like, comment, share, message, and conversation. Whether you’ve been here since the beginning or just recently stumbled into our little herd of misfits, I’m glad you’re here.\n\nAnd now, if you enjoy our content and would like to support our efforts, you can send Stars! Every Star helps support the rabbits, educational content, breed conservation efforts, and probably fuels a little extra coffee for the rabbit lady behind the page. ☕😂\n\nNo pressure whatsoever—I appreciate every single one of you whether you send Stars or not.\n\nNow tell me... which rabbit on this page has been your favorite so far? 👇🐰\n\nHere’s a glimpse at the rabbit lady in her pajamas! 😅⭐🥂🍾🎉🐇💜

Rust, Molt, and the Rabbit Who Wasn’t Falling Apart

A dark coat went rusty, loose fur went everywhere, and the grooming table became today’s very glamorous classroom.

To the untrained eye—and some days, to my eye before coffee—a rabbit in a heavy molt can look as though it is coming apart in installments. The coat may look uneven, tufts lift away, and darker fur can take on a rusty or faded cast that makes you wonder what on earth happened overnight.\n\nThis is where the hands-on part matters. Old, loose, sun-faded, or weathered fur can change the way a coat looks. Gentle grooming lets us see what is ready to release and what is still firmly attached, while also giving us a chance to check the skin underneath. We are helping the molt along, not trying to win an argument with every stubborn hair.\n\nI work slowly, support the rabbit securely, and keep watching the whole animal—not just the coat. Skin condition, body condition, appetite, water intake, droppings, and behavior all belong in the same picture. A changing coat can be perfectly ordinary; a rabbit acting ill, losing weight, or developing irritated skin deserves a closer look and, when needed, a rabbit-savvy veterinarian.\n\nThis is exactly the sort of lesson I want to share here: the unpolished, fur-on-your-shirt part of keeping rabbits that makes much more sense when somebody lets you stand beside the grooming table. And yes, I did leave that table wearing enough loose fur to qualify as a small, poorly organized rabbit.

The Fan, the Ring, and the Box I Threw

An Ohio heat wave, a fan with no directions, one hidden ring, and the deeply humbling walk toward asking my husband to fix what I “fixed.”

I’m gonna go ahead and say that TODAY, JUNE 29th is the first official day of Summer here in SW Ohio.\n\nHoly Humidity!! 😳🥵\n\nSo I ran out and bought a new fan for the buns, right? I get home, deal with dog chaos (because OMG Mom’s home!) and finally go out to put the fan together and there are NO DIRECTIONS. 😠😤\n\nOkay, I’m a smart woman, I got this. I open everything, lay it all out, triple check for any directions (still no) and get started. Pretty simple, twist this on here, pop that in there, then the pole, the base, and VOILA — 🤨🧐 Something’s not right. The big fan thingy doesn’t sit tight on the pole thingy.\n\n🤬 Whiskey Tango Foxtrot!! 🤬\n\nHOW? There’s no other pieces anywhere, so I (of course) go to look in the empty box and there’s just a crumbled piece of packaging paper. I throw the damn box (you know why) and I hear the slightest bit of a thump and I think to myself — that paper isn’t heavy enough to sound like that, soooo...\n\nSure enough, there was a little ring wrapped in the paper that goes on the fan thingy to make the other thingy fit tightly. 🤦‍♀️\n\nWell, now the problem is that I tightened the base onto the fan too well. It won’t come off so I can put the ring on. 😤😤\n\nSo, now I’m in my room pissed off, waiting for my little tantrum to pass so I can go ask my husband to fix what I messed up, and to be honest... that’s the worst part!!! 🙄

Showing Up in the Ohio Heat

American Chinchilla conservation is not always glamorous. Often, it looks like doing the daily work when nobody is watching.

Most people have never heard of American Chinchilla rabbits.\n\nThat’s exactly why they need us.\n\nEvery litter born, every rabbit shown, every educational post shared, and every conversation about heritage breeds helps keep these rabbits from fading into history.\n\nSometimes conservation isn’t glamorous.\n\nSometimes it’s cleaning cages in the Ohio heat.\n\nSometimes it’s answering the same questions over and over.\n\nSometimes it’s simply showing up every day because these breeds matter.\n\nThank you for following along and caring about these incredible rabbits.\n\nYou are helping more than you realize. ❤️\n\n⭐ Stars directly support the education, promotion, and preservation of heritage rabbit breeds at Nutt House Rabbitry.

Twice the Goal—and Then Some

The 4-H Kids Fund set a $500 goal. This community promptly doubled it and left us all staring at the total.

Y’ALL. 🐰💥\n\nWe set a goal of $500 for our 4-H Kids Fund this fair season.\n\nYou didn’t just meet it. You didn’t just pass it. You OBLITERATED it.\n\n$1,000 raised. One THOUSAND dollars. That’s double our goal—smashed into confetti like a wrecking ball through a paper wall.\n\nBecause of YOUR generosity, more kids will get to experience the magic of raising their first rabbit, stepping into the show ring with pride, and learning responsibility, compassion, and work ethic that’ll carry them through life. Kids who have the HEART for 4-H but not the budget? They’re IN now. Hutches, feed, fair fees, quality breeding stock—COVERED.\n\nEvery single dollar came from people who believe what we believe: that a kid + a rabbit + a little guidance = something powerful.\n\nFrom the bottom of our hearts (and from every bunny nose twitch in the barn): THANK YOU. You are the reason no child gets turned away from the show ring because of money.\n\nWe’re not done. The fair season is just getting started. Share this story. Tell somebody who loves supporting kids. Let’s keep this momentum HOPPING! 🐇✨

Barn Table Lessons • May 3, 2026

Let’s Talk About Bucks That Spray

An honest barn-table conversation about natural behavior, sanitation, health, temperament, and thoughtful breeding-program decisions.

If you’ve spent any time around intact male rabbits (bucks), you’ve probably encountered spraying at some point. It’s a natural behavior tied to hormones—bucks spray to mark territory, establish dominance, and even show interest in a doe. While it’s completely normal, it can definitely become... less than ideal in a rabbitry setting.\n\nSpraying can create sanitation challenges, strong odors, and extra cleaning work. It can also affect nearby rabbits, especially if they’re constantly being marked. Urine scald on spraying bucks is one example of the health concerns spraying can cause. It is a painful condition involving redness, inflammation, and fur loss on the hindquarters due to urine contact. In a breeding or production-focused rabbitry, these are important factors to consider when deciding which animals to keep in your program.\n\nThis is where culling comes into the conversation. Culling isn’t about punishment—it’s about making thoughtful, responsible decisions for the overall health, manageability, and goals of your herd. If a buck consistently sprays excessively despite proper housing, spacing, and management, he may not be the best fit for a breeding program. I’ve only recently learned that many breeders cull spraying bucks due to the health risks they can impose on the rest of the herd.\n\nBy selecting for calmer temperaments and more manageable behaviors, you’re improving not only your daily workflow but also the long-term quality of your lines. Many breeders choose to prioritize bucks that are productive, healthy, and easier to handle—because those traits matter just as much as conformation.\n\nOf course, every rabbitry is different. Some breeders tolerate a little spraying, while others prefer to eliminate it entirely through selective culling. There’s no one-size-fits-all answer—just what works best for your setup and goals.\n\nAt the end of the day, it comes down to balance: understanding natural behaviors while making practical decisions that support your animals and your operation.\n\nHow do you handle spraying in your rabbitry—do you work around it, or select against it?

The room is still being lived in

The last story has not happened yet.

I will keep adding the funny ones, the sad ones, the scary ones, the brave ones, and the ones Hurricane insists are being badly misrepresented. A home should gather stories as naturally as it gathers rabbit fur.
